THREE QUESTIONS TO OLIVIER RIVARD-COHEN FOUNDER OF MOTHERS

  1. Can you tell us a bit about your background ?

I started my career as a financial analyst in New-York working for the French bank Société Générale. In 2005, I joined ABN AMRO first in the Paris M&A team before moving to London and Dubai, where I used to deliver highly sensitive transactional solutions, for institutional or private investors, mostly from the MENA region.

Believe it or not but it’s precisely in that context that I first bumped into the international appetite for the creative class. My workmates were all, in parallel of their petrol, industry or telecom main activity, willing to invest into, or even buy strong brands from this dynamic, sexy yet poorly financed landscape.

As soon as I came back to Europe, I joined a Private Equity fund focused on brands, with executive offices in Paris, New York and Los Angeles, in order to go back to my favorite playground through the scope of his true expertise.

During this time, I witnessed the major gap between a traditional investor’s expectations and those of an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs are looking for added value, investors who have the inner capacity to help them grow and support their operational stakes, smart money; on the other hand, the investors are looking for fast profit, while showing devouring appetite for control.

I was taking part on that inadequate and soon-to-be obsolete system and decided to create Mothers.

2. Can you present Mothers?

The market has changed: in the old world, wholesalers and a handful of happy fews had it all. In the new world, customers and audiences get it back.

With the emergence of direct-to-consumer business models, brands need fast-provided and well-calibrated funding. But they also need the support of their clients and communities, also known as the new gold: influence. Blockchain made sense as catalysis of the whole process: as a tokenized fund, Mothers can provide both, and align interests of all.

On one hand, the technology allows us to simplify the traditional venture capital back office, and to open the LP position to the most, with accessible tickets, worldwide range, and of course, auto-execution of share profit along an evergreen cycle. In exchange for equity investment, Mothers provides its digital asset called MOS token, which upcoming listing on reliable exchanges will enhance high liquidity.

On the other hand, Mothers gathers a powerful community of influencers of all sizes and citizenship, who can invest in the fund, not in equity but in pragmatic social actions. They will support the brands they love, and which match the interests of their communities. The technology empowers fine-tuned tracking of performance, and release token reward with benefit on the whole portfolio’s economics.

Investors take risks, influencers take action, brands perform, and everyone shares the benefits.

Dedicated to the creatives and consumer brands, Mothers is a tokenized fund that provides brands with equity and powerful influence, in order to sustain the future champions.

3. What are the projects in which you want to invest?

We seek brands with a positive footprint, digital direct to consumer model, scalability and secret sauce for brand advocacy in beauty (cosmetics skincare, fragrances), food (f&b, hospitality), fashion (apparel, accessories, jewelry).

We offer flexible capital, investing in seed, first or second rounds with adjustments for breakout companies in our target segments and special operations.

Mothers aim to finance selected creative brands via tickets from $100k to $2,5m. These tickets are allocated according to the degree of maturity of each brand, and their development project.

Some brands rule the game… Glossier, Outdoor Voices, Casper, Reformation, … Mothers is looking for their heirs.
